2012 marks the 200th anniversary since Charles Dickens's birth. Born in 1812, Dickens was a social commentator of the highest order and remains one of our greatest authors whose writing is still relevant and has the power to move us today.
To celebrate his bicentenary, Lancashire County Council in conjunction with The Reading Agency are holding a Dickens themed readers day. This is the only such event to be held nationally and is specifically for readers – whether you are in one of our reading groups or you read alone.
In addition to this headline event, there are also a number of other events, exhibitions and readings in libraries near you. You'll find details in our What's On guide.
Many years ago, Charles Dickens used to tour the country giving readings from his works and charging just a penny. In Charles Dickens anniversary year we will be hosting our very own penny readings with words and music from special guests including John Cummings and Borderline Theatre, Dorothy Spencer, The Secret Singers, Burnley Municipal Choir, and the Allegra Quartet.
Dickens Readers' Day is Sunday 4 November from 10.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at Lancaster Library
The day features Claire Tomalin (Dickens biographer), Ronald Frame (author of "Havisham"), and speakers from Lancaster University, The Reader Organisation and The Reading Agency about the relevance and power of reading Dickens today. This will be a whole day of celebration including exhibition, lunch, give-aways and a walk "in the footsteps of Dickens in Lancaster".
The cost of this event is £7.50 (including lunch). Bookings can be made via the Dukes Theatre Lancaster or 01524 598500 (local rate calls). However, if you are a student or a member of one of our reading groups, places are FREE! Please book these free tickets (preferably with one person bookling for the whole group) by calling 01995 607661.
For reading groups in the Lancaster district there will be a special part of the day when you will be able to meet other group members from the local area. You should have received some information about this already but if you need more information about this or any other part of the day, please phone Janet Swan on 07500 065535.
