This handlist, alphabetical by Anglican parish, includes all the principal sources for tracing ancestors through Church of England records, including parish registers, bishop’s transcripts, copy registers and records of monumental inscriptions. The geographical area covered is that of pre-1974 Lancashire plus those parishes transferred to Lancashire from Yorkshire in 1974.
Historically most parishes in Lancashire were unusually large and were often subdivided into chapelries, each with its own church. Only later did chapelries become parishes in their own right. The former parishes are known as ancient parishes and, in this handlist, are given in brackets after each placename and dedication.
