Preston is the city at the heart of the national cycle network. The Guild Wheel is a new route round the city to celebrate 2012 Guild.
A direct cycle path is being developed into Preston Railway Station and the Fishergate Shopping Centre from the south of the river. The route is now open to Avenham Park.
From Adelphi Roundabout by the University follow quiet roads and cycle paths across Ashton Park to the Larches Estate. You will be surprised how easy it is to get into the city centre from the Larches without having to cycle on a main road.
Part of National Cycle Route 6.
From Watling Street Road and Longsands use National Cycle Route 6 to go into town across Moor Park. If you work in Preston North East Employment use the cycle path on Midgery Lane to get to work. National Cycle Route 6 continues to Lancaster.
From West View Leisure Centre use the cycle path on the old railway to get out to Brookfield, Red Scar and Grimsargh. In the long term it is planned to extend the cycle path into Preston City Centre. In the meantime you can use minor roads to get into the city centre from West View Leisure Centre.
Part of National Cycle Route 62 to Lytham.
If you live in Cottam, Ingol or north of Blackpool Road use the Lancaster Canal or the Ribble Link Canal to cycle into town. There is a sealed surface on the canal towpath, so you do not have to worry about getting muddy. The towpath is also a great way of getting to the University Sports Centre. It is planned to open a cross city cycle route from Cottam to Fulwood, the hospital and Preston College in the future.
Cycling is part of University life and a great way of getting around town. We are working with Uclan to make the University area safer to cycle in by introducing new cycle crossings and improving cycle parking. You can also cycle to the University sports centre along the canal.
Uclan offer members of the university community free cycle training from beginner to experienced.
There is a cycle race track at the University Sports Centre. The race track is used for local clubs and for wheels for all sessions.
Preston BMX track on London Road offers competition standard BMX facilities. The track is home to Preston Pirates BMX club.
