Transport

Brockholes Visitors Centre

The local transport system has a major impact on people's to access employment, education, shopping, health and leisure facilities etc, besides having a direct impact on the local environment. This section includes: travel volume, travel to work and school, road casualties and cycling.

From a public health point of view, sustainable transport initiatives can promote healthy living, create safer communities by reducing accidents, mitigate the effects of climate change and improve the local quality of life in general. It is important to note however that some long-term trends such as car usage, road traffic accidents and vehicle emissions present real challenges for the future in trying to balance the needs of improving access and economic growth with encouraging healthy activities, improving the attractiveness of local  communities and moving towards a more sustainable future.

The Central Lancashire Highways and Transport Masterplan sets out key proposals for transport improvements in the Preston, Chorley and South Ribble area.

Please also see the county council's commissioning plan web page that details capital and service performance updates (dashboards) for each of 12 districts in the Lancashire County Council area. Much of the content of the 12 'dashboards' is transport-related.

The Guild Wheel

The Preston Guild Wheel is a 21 mile "Greenway" that encircles the city of Preston, linking the city to the countryside. It is both a walking and cycling route and was created as a lasting legacy for the 2012 Preston Guild.

The route is mainly off-road and traffic free, providing a scenic and safe cycling and walking route for all the family to use. For more information on the Guild Wheel please follow this link.
