News: New Era For Accrington Community Centre

Monday, 31st January 2005
(PR 2029)

Children and adults across Hyndburn are being invited to look at the range of exciting activities on offer at the New Era complex, in Accrington.

The Paradise Street centre is holding an open day on Saturday, 5 February to encourage the community to use its facilities.

Children can take part in football competitions and play on trampolines, as well as joining a fun-packed treasure hunt.

Local artist Sue Gibson will also work with young people on model making and designs to incorporate into the building's courtyard.

There is a wide range of activities open to adults including computer training and 'Who do you think you are?', where people can find out how to research their family tree.

In addition there will be classes in digital photography and holistic therapies, as well as smoking cessation advice.

Liz Pilkington, manager of New Era, said:

"We have been open for almost four years now and we are throwing our doors open to show what exciting facilities we have on offer.

"We want as many people as possible to come down to find out about the fantastic opportunities they can participate in.

"It's a well-used centre by a range of different people and we are always encouraging new users, young and old, to take part in new activities."

The facilities on offer include a sports hall, recording studio, internet access, a youth club, Hyndburn Citizens' Advice Bureau and a modern fitness gym.

County Councillor Wendy Dwyer (Accrington South) will be visiting the centre in the afternoon to take part in the fun.

She said:

"I'm particularly looking forward to the digital photography class as I have bought a camera recently.

"I've visited New Era many times before and I have always been impressed by the wonderful facilities there.

"Hopefully the open day will encourage even more local people to start taking part in the activities as there is something for everyone."

New Era is open seven days a week if you are looking for somewhere to play sport, hold meetings or even children's parties and weddings.

The open day will run from 10am until 4pm and further details can be obtained from Liz Pilkington on 01254-300110.
