News: Safety First At Bridge

Friday, 6th February 2004
(PR 1090)

WORKERS for Lancashire County Council will start work on Monday to repair Green Ayre Bridge in Lancaster.

The bridge, a continuation of Skerton Bridge over the River Lune, was inspected last year and it was found that concrete below steel supporting beams had become partially detached.

Work is expected to last for seven weeks but there will be no delays to pedestrians, motorists or cyclists.

County Councillor Jean Yates, Lancashire County Council's Cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, said:

"It is a matter of safety-first for people below the bridge.

"The concrete is basically cosmetic - it saves us having to paint the beams. We put scaffolding underneath the bridge late last year to prevent it falling to the ground and we are now repairing it."

The work will not affect traffic flow.
