Grant aid for arts development

The remaining deadlines for submission of applications to the Arts Development Service in 2008/09 are:

  • April 2008
  • August 2008
  • November 2008

We can pay grants for:

Project and Development: We normally consider support for up to 50% of the total arts expenditure, primarily artist's fees.

The sum available for project applications is around £107,000. Demand on our projects fund usually outstrips resources and although we will consider support for up to 50% of the total arts expenditure your project has a greater chance of success if you can strongly demonstrate countywide significance and have or plan to have more than 50% partnership funding. Where box-office income is expected, we would usually offer a split guarantee against loss. We normally consider offering development support in partnership with other agencies or local authorities.

Strategic work: The sum available is around £313,000. This fund is limited to organisations who demonstrate a high level of strategic working with community organisations and partners across the county. We allocate strategic funds to organisations that are also receiving funds from Arts Council England, North West and the appropriate district authority.

Purpose of our grant aid

The arts allocation supports creative work that contributes to the overall development of the arts in Lancashire. We support activities providing employment for professional artists/arts organisations and which also have countywide significance. This may be demonstrated by, for example the innovative quality of the project; the demonstration of new ways of working; the project's wide geographical impact; the potential audience; how the findings from the project will be disseminated; the scale of the project; the range of partners involved; or the project's contribution to the pattern of provision in the county.

Our assessment criteria

Please see the relevant toolkit for further information. We expect all applications to demonstrate the following:

  1. Strong potential to deliver countywide impact and benefit.
  2. Clear artistic ambitions and the employment of a professional artist or artists. Projects should demonstrate innovation and provide a model of good practice within arts development.
  3. Plans to ensure the quality of experience for participants, where participatory work is involved.
  4. Inclusion of a well-planned education/outreach programme where appropriate.
  5. Potential for further development or follow-up from the project.
  6. Opportunities for involvement by those experiencing social and economic deprivation or discrimination.
  7. Clear aims and a plan for implementation which shows an awareness of best practice.
  8. A clear plan for marketing and publicity.
  9. A clear plan for project evaluation and documentation including provision of digital images on CD Rom or other appropriate means of recording the event , and dissemination of the project results where appropriate.
  10. 'Matching' funds (at least 50% in cash) from other sources, such as the relevant district council(s), Arts Council England – North West, business sponsorship, trusts, and income generation.
  11. Plans to maximise box-office income, where appropriate.
  12. Overall financial need.
  13. Satisfactory financial and managerial control in the organisation.

We will give priority to applications that receive financial support from the relevant district council(s) and to those that involve participation. In considering applications, we will also take into account the need to support and develop activity throughout the county and how far the project or activity will contribute to arts development in Lancashire .

Projects demonstrating the potential for further development or longer-lasting public benefit are a higher priority than one-off projects.
