Moving into further education

In year nine, if you have a statement of special educational needs or education, health and care (EHC) plan your annual review is particularly important as it will include discussions and plans for your transition into further education and adult life.

The year nine review may involve all those people and organisations who will play a major role when you leave school. This could include the Young People's Service and social services.

It is likely that you will work with a Young People's Service worker to write a personal action plan for discussion at the review meeting. The head teacher must make sure that a transition plan is completed after the meeting.

The transition plan can be discussed and changed, if necessary, at a later review meeting. You and your family will be asked to help with this plan.

You could stay on at an ordinary or a special school, or move to a college of further education or into work-based training.

If you want to leave school at the end of year 11 to go to a sixth form, further education college or to work-based training, the Young People's Service can provide you with information, advice and guidance which will enable you to identify all the options open to you and help you through the decision making process. Information, advice and guidance is available to all young people with special needs even if you don't have a SEN statement or EHC plan.

The Young People's Service works with further-education and training providers to make sure you get the help you need.

If you need more information contact your school or the Young People's Service.

If you have a high banded statement of special educational needs or EHC plan the Transition Service may provide this support instead of the Young People's Service.

If you are receiving support from a social worker, the Youth Offending Team or Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services they will also be able to help and support you though this time.

You can find more information about post 16 training and apprenticeships on the youth zone website.
