Our venues

Take your pupils on a school trip they will never forget - to visit the last surviving 19th century steam powered mill in the world! Learn about the lives of the people who would have worked in the mill and watch how the Lancashire boiler and steam engine 'PEACE' powers the 300 looms in the weaving shed.
Mill life (2hrs) Key Stages 1, 2 and 3
What was life like for workers at Queen Street Mill? Explore the site to discover the conditions they worked in and find out about jobs that children had to do. Examine the truly unique features of the mill and discover the ingenious way in which water is collected, stored and cycled. This session also includes the opportunity to see the remarkable Lancashire boiler and steam engine PEACE. (Please note working demonstrations will only be available in the afternoon when the boiler is up to pressure).
Victorian schoolroom (1hr) Key Stages 1 and 2
Take a trip back to school with our Victorian school teacher. Become a half-timer in the mill and learn to say your tables and how to write properly using a slate and slate pencil.
Victorian playtime (1hr) Key Stages 1 and 2
What toys did Victorian children play with? Discover the difference between toys of rich and poor children and then try them out for yourselves!
Victorian wardrobe and object handling (1hr) Key Stages 1, 2 and 3
Visit our Victorian wardrobe and find out what it was like to dress as a mill worker. Then handle real objects from Victorian domestic and working life.
Weaving (1hr) Key Stages 1, 2 and 3

We advise that teachers and pupils take part in the core session in order to fully experience the unique features of Queen Street Mill Textile Museum. For full day visits, two additional activities can also be included.
Accompanying adults free.
