Interior

The ground floor of the Custom House was once used as storage space for the incoming goods of the merchants, who wanted to keep their most valuable imports as close to the Port Commission officials as possible. The first floor, like many Custom Houses across the world features a “Long Room”.  This was where many of the merchants would meet to discuss how business was proceeding and for captains to declare goods subject to import taxation.

The Museum includes two period room settings, showing the Collector’s Office as it might have been decorated and furnished in the late Georgian period and the goods handling of the local dock workers.
