Lancaster Maritime Museum

Lancaster Maritime Museum

Explore Lancaster’s Golden Age and rich maritime and natural history.

Overlooking the river Lune, and the fabulous Georgian architecture of St George’s Quay sits Lancaster Maritime Museum. The Museum is housed in the Port of Lancaster Custom House and warehouse buildings which date from the second half of the 18th century. The buildings along the quayside developed around this time as a result of the success of overseas trade.  Alongside of the Museum are buildings which belonged to prosperous Quaker slave trader Dodshon Foster.

This now peaceful stretch of the river would once have bustled with ship building activity and the loading and unloading of goods. There is now an ever changing view across the river with the ebb and flow of the tide and the presence of the bird life which lives along its banks.

Please Note:

The Museum is fully accessible to all visitors with lift access to the upper floors. We regret that on some occasions access may need be limited to upper levels to ensure visitor safety in the event of an emergency.  Please call or email the museum for more details.

Group organisers: please contact us in advance for details of facilities so that we can ensure that you get the most out of your visit.

Visions of the World

Visions of the World Exhibition

We are delighted to be able to announce the dates of our exhibition Visions of the World. This stunning exhibition from the Royal Geographical Society in London had unfortunately been delayed reaching us because of the snowy conditions across the country.

About the exhibition
New lands and cultures have always propelled travellers, explorers and scientists to the far corners of this earth, but not until relatively recent times has this fascination coupled with photography produced such lasting and captivating insights. This exhibition provides a glimpse of the Royal Geographic Society’s vast collection and reflects on the artistry of the photographers.
