Workshop 1
Victorian butler & housekeeper (2hrs) Key Stages 1 and 2
Visit the kitchens and discover the duties of the butler at the Hall. Hands-on activities include polishing the silver and instruction in setting the table correctly. Follow the housekeeper and learn about the jobs she has to do every day. A practical session including laying a fire in one of the bedroom
Workshop 2
Time Scene Investigations: Symbolism in portraits (2hrs) Key Stages 2 and 3
Join our time scene officer and explore the historical portraits housed within Gawthorpe Hall. Use your skills as a time scene detective to find and interpret the hidden meanings within the paintings. Examine samples of the fabrics seen in the portrait, learn about their history and what they signify. Then using what you have discovered about symbolism; plan, design and create your own portrait. What symbolism will you hide in yours?
Workshop 3
The GawthorpeWardrobe (2hrs) Key Stages 1 and 2
Inspired by the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection, pupils will create costumed characters based on key figures from the history of Gawthorpe Hall. This is a practical, hands-on craft activity that will unlock pupils' imagination as they design an animated character to take away.
Site Tour (1hr) Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 - combines with all workshops to give a full day.
