Our venues

Visit our award winning museum and let us take you on a journey through 350 million years of history. Discover the spectacular Norman keep, explore the museum galleries or learn about everything that happened in the year 1066 from our Norman nobleman Henry de Brocas.
1066 and all that... (2hrs)
Key Stages 2 and 3
Join Henry de Brocas as he takes your pupils on an exciting journey through one of history's most important years - 1066. Through dynamic hands on participation your pupils will explore and be an active part of 1066. They will witness the rise and fall of the last Anglo Saxon king, to be party to the invasion of both Vikings and Normans, participate in three battles and explore the Norman war machine. There will also be a chance to examine Norman and Saxon arms and armour.
Your pupils will then use the skills that they have learned by designing and making armour... for an egg! They will then test their armour using the ancient method of the "Long Drop" to see who is crowned "Champion of the Egg."
Castles and Keeps (2hrs) Key Stages 1, 2 and 3
Follow an historical tour of the Norman keep and find out how to defend a castle whilst taking in the spectacular views over Clitheroe and the surrounding area. Then get to grips with a range of exciting, hands on activities that will utilise a range of cross curricular skills. Build your own Motte and Bailey castle utilising key ideas you have learnt on the tour. Older pupils will explore the science behind trebuchets and catapults as they use these principles to attack an enemy castle.
Myths and legends (2hrs) Key Stages 1 and 2
Come and meet our Dragon Protection Officer and enrol in SWORD (Society for the Welfare Of Rare Dragons).
You will be taught all the skills you need to become a SWORD Ranger. Learn about the history of SWORD, how to tell dragons apart, where they live, what they eat, their likes and dislikes and what makes them so scary. Then create your own school dragon. Next you will learn the SWORD techniques to keep you safe from an angry dragon, and those needed to stop Dragon Slayers. Then sit and hear the tale of "The Clitheroe Dragon". Myth and legend combine to recreate a refreshing hands on glimpse of creative storytelling and adventure.
