Lancashire Museums have an exciting programme of fun-filled events and activities for families in 2009.

Museums are a great place to explore, touch, learn, discover and most of all to have fun!  They can bring out the child in all of us.  For younger visitors in particular a trip to the museum can be a magical experience that will stay with them forever.

New events are always being added so keep checking our website to find out more about our family activities.

Lancaster Maritime

  • Shipwrecks & Safety at Sea
    28th July 10.30am–12.30pm & 1.30pm-3.30pm
    A range of art activities led by tutors from the local adult college.
    Pre-booking required.

Museum of Lancashire

  • Men, Mysteries & Museums
    Calling all dads, grandads or male carers - bring the kids along to this four week course of activities.  Find out what it's like to work in a museum & discover some of the weird and wonderful objects we have in our stores.
    20th June, 4th, 11th & 18th July
    10.30am-2.30pm
    Suitable for ages 7+. Booking required - contact: Sue Doyle at Lancashire College on 01257 516322.
  • WOW Week
    From 15th to 19th June the museum will be displaying the work of local school children to promote 'Wonderful Opportunities for schools Week.'

Lancaster City Museum

Families are invited to an exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Preston bypass. Discover how the first stretch of motorway was built, listen to stories from people who remember the day the bypass was opened and what life was like before we had motorways.

Children can have fun exploring the activity corner with costumes for dressing up, giant road maps and toy vehicle's, whilst adults can take a trip down memory lane in the replica 1965 Forton Services with bird's eye views of the local area from the prominent Pennine Tower.

To celebrate the M6:50 Exhibition, the museum is also hosting a number of themed activities throughout the summer including:

  • Super Saturday! 
    6th June, 1.30pm-3.30pm
    Craft based activities for all the family inspired by our new M6 Exhibition.
  • Craft activities on the travel, transport & construction theme
    23rd & 30th July, 10.30am-12.30pm & 1.30pm-3.30pm
