Learning with Lancashire Museums

Welcome to the NEW Simply Schools programme for the 2012/13 school year!

At Lancashire Museums we want you and your pupils to love museums just as much as we do! Our aim is to give pupils the opportunity to explore and appreciate Lancashire's rich heritage through access to our unique collections and stimulating sites.

We offer:

• Fascinating places to explore and real historical objects to see and touch.
• The chance to be inspired and encouraged to think creatively during one of our practical school sessions.
• Active participation in new and unique experiences with our programme of special events, which are based on a variety of themes and hosted by many of our sites throughout the year.
• Museum loan boxes to use in the classroom in order to enhance and complement learning sessions.
• Risk assessed activities and trained staff with CRB certificates 
   

School sessions can be tailored to complement your curriculum. We work closely with teachers to meet individual needs and reinforce classroom learning.

At our museums, we make sure teachers and adults on school trips visit us for FREE (except at Lancaster Castle, where a reduced admission price is offered).

Teachers are also invited to make a FREE preliminary site visit to all of our sites – please telephone the site to arrange your visit.

Myths and legends at Clitheroe Castle Museum

Come and meet our Dragon Protection Officer and enrol in SWORD (Society for the Welfare of Rare Dragons).

Meet the mill workers at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum

Meet mill workers who will share stories about their Victorian childhool spent as half-timers. Watch history come alive as they demonstrate working mill machinery and talk about life at the mill.

New activities at the Museum of Lancashire

Come and visit this newly refurbished hidden gem of a museum and take part in one of our exciting new school sessions! Take part in a Victorian court case, receive a visit from a Ministry of Defence representative to learn about World War II government initiatives, or try your hand at archaeology!

Stories of the World

Stories of the World is part of the national Cultural Olympiad. In the north west, six museums with collections related to the textile industry have come together to engage young people aged 14-24 in their textile heritage.

Lancashire Museums has been working with four groups of young people to discover what the local textile story means to them. A group in Rossendale created art installations at Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, a group in Oswaldtwistle learned about photography from a professional photographer, created two huge pasting displays on  local buildings and produced a photographic installation in Queen Street Mill. A Burnley group have been working to produce a film following their exploration of their textile history, premiered at Burnley Mechanics on 25th February 2012 and Burnley College fashion students have worked with a young fashion designer to create a fashion show in the weaving shed at Queen Street Mill.
