Disability Facilities at Wycoller

The main car park is 600m. from the village of Wycoller which is closed to visitor traffic. Orange badge holders can, however, drive into the village and park either at Pepper Hill Barn, the village centre or alongside the Aisled Barn. At present there are no designated bays for orange badge holders and parking in the village centre is at a premium with residents having priority. Pepper Hill Barn contains the visitor centre and the ground floor is accessible by wheel chair. The entrance is from a paved foot path and is within 20m. of the tarmac car park. The centre holds displays and exhibits of Wycoller and the Countryside and has toilet facilities accessible by wheelchair users. Access from Pepper Hill Barn to the rest of the site is along a rough track and there is further parking by the side of the track outside the Aisled Barn. If parking at Pepper Hill Barn it is 70m. along the rough track to the first of Wycoller's famous bridges the Packhorse bridge and a further 100m. to the Aisled barn display area.

Wycoller Hall Ruins

On route to the Aisled Barn on the left are the ruins of Wycoller Hall, accessible along a cobbled path 1.2m. wide. Wycoller Hall is believed to be the model for Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Brontè's "Jane Eyre". The Aisled Barn, built in the 1630's is one of the finest examples of its kind left in Lancashire and is currently used for themed displays. Access is on a stone cobble path and the main entrance is 20m. from the parking area. There is a specially constructed ramp that allows wheel chair access to the information panels and touch screen computer system. The picnic area around the duck pond is 55m. along a smooth paved surface and has 8 tables that will seat able bodied visitors and wheel chair users. these tables are within 30m. of the toilet facilities and 60m. of the parking area.

Aisled Barn is open weekends and public holidays 10:15 to 16:45 and weekdays by arrangement by telephoning 01772 534709. The road surface from the Aisled Barn up the valley is tarmac and suitable for wheel chair use. The road is used by farm vehicles from further up the valley so caution is required. From the Aisled Barn to Copy House Bridge following the road is 175m. and after crossing the bridge a riverside path suitable for disabled visitors leads back to the village centre past benches, ponds and wildlife areas. Once back in the village centre access to Pepper Hill Barn, Aisled Barn and Wycoller Hall is across the ford or over the Pack Horse bridge. These routes are not suitable for wheelchairs. A route, through the village and turn right leads back to Pepper Hill Barn, a distance of 180m. partly over a rough stone track.

To access the village centre, cafè and trail, please park in the village adjacent to the cafè. The parking area in the village is 30m. from the cafè and 70m. to the start of the trail, over a tarmac surface. The cafè has limited disabled access to the ground floor and has a stair lift to the upstairs gallery. The cafè is open 11:00am to 17:30pm every day except Mondays, and is open Bank Holidays.
