Gritting in Central & South Lancs this afternoon - risk of icy roads

We have weather predictions of ice forming and road surface temperatures falling to minus 6 degrees in places.  Therefore we will be precautionary gritting all priority routes.

The forecast for Saturday 17 December 2011 is for showers to clear this afternoon leaving a mainly dry cold night.  Showers are expected to return again from the early morning onwards.  Road surface temperatures are expected to fall below freezing quickly this evening and remain below for most of the night leading to frost or ice on many road surfaces.  Therefore an instruction has been given to apply a heavy application of salt to all priority routes commencing at 14:00hrs this afternoon.
